Best ProtonMail Alternatives 2026
& Official Onion Address
Looking for a ProtonMail alternative with real Tor support? We compare the best options — and include the official ProtonMail .onion address. Spoiler: Onion Mail is the only service built natively for Tor, with no phone number required.
The official ProtonMail onion address
ProtonMail maintains an official .onion mirror accessible via Tor Browser. Here is the current address:
⚠️ Important limitations of ProtonMail on Tor
ProtonMail's onion site is a mirror, not a native hidden service. This means traffic still exits the Tor network to reach ProtonMail's servers. Additionally, ProtonMail frequently blocks new account registrations from Tor, requiring phone number verification that compromises your anonymity. Existing users can log in, but creating a new anonymous account via Tor is often not possible.
Best ProtonMail Alternatives in 2026
If you are looking to move away from ProtonMail, here are the most serious alternatives — each with a different privacy trade-off.
🧅 1. Onion Mail — Best for Tor & Full Anonymity
The only email service built as a native .onion hidden service. Register without a phone number, directly from Tor Browser. All messages are encrypted with your PGP key automatically. Supports IMAP/SMTP, anonymous crypto payments, and post-quantum messaging. Best for: users who need real anonymity, activists, journalists, Tor users.
🔒 2. Tuta (formerly Tutanota) — Best Free Encrypted Email
Open-source end-to-end encrypted email with a solid free tier. No .onion address and no IMAP/SMTP support, but a good option if you do not need Tor. Requires no phone number for registration. Best for: users who want encrypted email without paying, and don't need Tor.
📧 3. Mailfence — Best for Business Privacy
Belgian email provider with strong privacy laws, PGP support, and no advertising business model. Not anonymous but very private. Supports IMAP/SMTP. Best for: professionals who want privacy without sacrificing usability.
🌐 4. StartMail — Best for Aliases
Dutch privacy-focused email with unlimited disposable aliases. Good for reducing spam and compartmentalizing identities. PGP supported. No free tier. Best for: users who want alias management and clean inbox.
⚡ 5. Guerrilla Mail / Temp Mail — Best for Disposable Addresses
Not a ProtonMail replacement but useful for one-off registrations where you don't want to expose your real address. No account needed. Best for: throwaway addresses, not for ongoing private communication.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ProtonMail onion address in 2026?
ProtonMail's official .onion address is protonmailrmez3lotccipshtkleegetolb73fuirgj7r4o4vfu7ozyd.onion. However it is a mirror, not a native hidden service, and account registration from Tor is frequently blocked.
Can I create a ProtonMail account via Tor without a phone number?
In most cases no — ProtonMail requires phone verification for new accounts created from Tor exit nodes. Onion Mail allows registration directly from Tor with no phone number required.
Does Tuta (Tutanota) have a .onion address?
No. Tuta does not offer any .onion hidden service. If Tor access is important to you, Onion Mail is currently the most complete option with a native hidden service.
What is the difference between a Tor mirror and a native .onion service?
A Tor mirror routes your traffic through Tor but the final connection still exits to the clearnet server — your anonymity depends on the exit node. A native .onion service keeps your traffic entirely inside the Tor network from start to finish — the server never knows your IP and there is no exit node to intercept traffic.
What is post-quantum encryption and why does it matter?
Post-quantum encryption uses algorithms resistant to attacks from quantum computers. Intelligence agencies are currently storing encrypted communications to decrypt them once quantum computers become available — a strategy called "harvest now, decrypt later." Onion Mail integrates PQC Server to protect your messages against this threat. Learn more →
